The Safe & Simple Way to Clean Your 14K Solid Gold Jewelry at Home

Heon Jewelry
3 min read

One of the greatest joys of owning 14K solid gold jewelry is living in it. Unlike plated pieces, you can wear your solid gold chains, rings, and earrings 24/7—in the shower, at the gym, and to the beach.

(If you're not sure why, our guide on Solid Gold vs. Plated explains it all.)

But while your Heon pieces won't tarnish, everyday life—think lotions, natural skin oils, and dust—can build up and temporarily dull their shine.

The good news? Restoring that "like new" sparkle is incredibly simple. You don't need harsh chemicals. Here is the only method our jewelry experts recommend.

The 5-Minute Cleaning Routine

You only need three things you already have in your home. This method is safe for all 14K solid gold pieces, including delicate chains.

What You'll Need:

  • A small bowl

  • Warm (not hot) water

  • A few drops of mild dish soap (like Dawn)

  • A very soft-bristled toothbrush (a baby toothbrush is perfect)

  • A soft, lint-free cloth (a microfiber cloth or an old cotton t-shirt works)

Step-by-Step: How to Clean Your Gold

Step 1: The Soak (3-5 Minutes) Fill your bowl with warm water and add a few drops of mild dish soap. Swirl to create suds. Place your gold jewelry directly into the bowl and let it soak for 3 to 5 minutes. This will loosen up any oils, lotions, or dirt.

Step 2: The Gentle Scrub (1 Minute) Take one piece of jewelry out at a time. Dip your soft-bristled toothbrush into the soapy water and gently scrub the piece. Pay special attention to crevices, like the links of a Rope Chain or the settings on a ring.

  • Key Tip: Be extremely gentle. You are not trying to "scrub" the gold; you are simply using the soft bristles to clear away the loosened grime. For a delicate piece like a Herringbone Chain, you can often just use your fingers to rub the chain in the soapy water.

Step 3: The Rinse (1 Minute) Rinse your jewelry under warm, running water. Important: Make sure to plug your sink drain first! You can also rinse the jewelry in a separate bowl of clean water.

Step 4: The Dry & Polish (1 Minute) Do not use a paper towel, which can be abrasive. Lay your jewelry on a soft, lint-free cloth. Gently pat it dry. You can use the cloth to give the piece a final buff and polish, bringing back its original high shine.

What to AVOID (The "Don't" List)

The beauty of 14K solid gold is its durability, but it's not invincible. To keep it safe, never use these:

  • Harsh Chemicals: Bleach (chlorine) is the #1 enemy of gold. It can weaken the metal's structure. Avoid hot tubs and heavily chlorinated pools.

  • Abrasive Cleaners: Toothpaste or baking soda are too abrasive and will leave micro-scratches on the surface, dulling the finish.

  • Boiling Water: Can damage delicate pieces (if they contain stones) and is unnecessary. Warm water is all you need.

  • "Gold Dip" Solutions: Many store-bought "jewelry dips" are extremely harsh and designed for silver, not gold. Stick to soap and water.
